DBT PORTAL

Progress Report of DBT Star College Scheme Phase-1

A.  QualitativeimprovementsduetoDBT support

  • Grant received from the Strengthening Component of the DBT Star College scheme had assisted us to meet the inadequacy of instruments to carry out new practical (CBCS), project works and other experiments. Subsequently, Students’ access to the instruments and equipments have greatly enhanced and enabled our individual students or a small batch of students of each semester to perform prescribed practical/ experiments in instead of single demonstration made by the faculty members. Faculty members of the beneficiary Departments also benefited for their own research activities.
  • Majorities of the text and the reference books were confined in the central library of the college and there was a scarcity of books in the Departmental libraries of the beneficiary Departments before Star College Support. Number of books were gradually increasing in the Departmental libraries and additionally, books for the advanced studies are being issued from the Departmental seminar libraries using Librarika digital platform.
  • Computational facility and e-learning in the beneficiary Departments have greatly increased and students are allowed to use these PCs to access various e-content form different sources (NPTL, SWAM, Coursera etc.). The PCs were also enhanced   learning of basic of software and programming.
  • New topics namely Bioinformatics, Supramolecular Chemistry, Crystal Engineering, Green Chemistry, nano- science etc. have been introduced as a part of DBT star college activities. Introduction of such topics impacted enormously on students’ interest in interdisciplinary research activities currently going on in or country and such kind of interest were lack before the DBT star college support.
  • Student visit to different research institutes, botanical garden and local Heritage Biodiversity (Chilkigarh) sites has also been partly enhanced after the DBT Star College support and we have already arranged some such visit in local floral biodiversity sites UGC, DAE Kolkata Centre, Vesaja Uddan, Chilkigar. Many of such planned activities were postponed due to COVID-19 lock down situation.
  • Number of webinar/seminars/Workshop and invited lectures organised by the beneficiary Departments have also been greatly increased after the DBT support.
  • The DBT support motivate the college administration to renovate and upgrade all the science laboratory and three students’ hostels towards achieving state of the arts infrastructure.

Ayurbedacharya Shibkali Bhattachrya Herbs Garden

Jhargram Raj College, Jhargram, West Bengal, 721507

Ayurbedacharya Shibkali Bhattachryawas one of the greatest Indian herbalists. He had immense affection for the country's resources and culture. As a result, he has been wandering in the forests and deserts of this country for a long time to enrich Ayurveda with strong curiosity. He had tested their qualities by collecting known and unknown valuable herbs. Whether they can be applied scientifically in different treatments - he has confirmed for himself. He wrote, "Chiranjeev Banaushadhi”, a 11-volume seminal book for the benefit of people. He was awarded the Rabindra Awardby the Paschim Bangla Academy in 1986. In 1969, he was conferred the title of 'Ayurvedacharya' by the West Bengal Ayurveda Parishad, i.e., the State Ayurveda Faculty Board, and the 'Pranacharya' by the Srividvat Vaidya Parishad of Delhi. He was awarded the Berkeley Medal of the Asiatic Society and the Narsingh Das Agarwala Award from the University of Delhi.

Main objectives:

  1. ex-situ conservation of medicinal plants
  2. demonstration for faculty members, students and non-teaching staff.
  3. direct involvement of students of Botany to fulfil their syllabus and hands on experience
  4. Department of Chemistry and zoology will be involved to extract and isolate the active compounds and relevant biological studies respectively.

Location: Place between the two wings of the Department of Chemistry of Jhargram Raj College

Area:6000 sq feet

Previous Situation:One plantation programme was taken about fifteen years back by NSS unit of this college and planted some permanent plants in this place. These plants are also there at present. These are as follows
