Since its inception in 1953, the Department of Commerce, Jhargram Raj College has travelled a long way. This Department was initially introduced as an intermediate course in commerce. Later in the year 1959, B.Com General Degree course was introduced under the affiliation of University of Calcutta. It was in the year 1973 when for the first time B.Com Honours specializing in Accounting and Finance subject was introduced under the affiliation of University of Calcutta. In the year 1985, Jhargram Raj College changed its affiliation from University of Calcutta to Vidyasagar University. Since 1985 the Department of Commerce has been affiliated to Vidyasagar University for teaching the B.Com course. Over the years the Department has been running its programme with the service of both full-time as well as part-time teaching faculty members. At present, the Department has five fullt-ime faculty members and three State-Aided College teachers.

The Department as per the instruction of Vidyasagar University has been keeping its curriculum updated from time to time. The last revision of curriculum has taken place very recently in the month of July 2018. Under the new curriculum, the Department had upgraded to the Choice Based Credit System (C.B.C.S) or the system of semester-based teaching. As per the new curriculum the entire B.com course run by the Department is divided into six semesters, each semester comprising of six months. Currently B.Com course run by the Department takes Classes in the morning section.

The main objective of this Department is to create a competent commerce graduates for the changing economic scenario and the corporate world. The Department focuses on making its students familiar with the knowledge of business, trade, market fluctuation, basics of economics, fiscal policies, industrial policies, share market, banking, etc. with an aim to make them capable for various career options in future.
