DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

 

I. Film Screening for Students:

The Department of English is committed to enhancing the experience of learning by engaging the students in activities beyond the classroom. Teachers from the department have been organising screenings of films relevant to the prescribed syllabus as well as films that would enrich the students' knowledge of literatures and cultures. At least two film screenings are organised in each semester:

II. Seminars and Paper Presentation Programmes:

Departmental Seminars and Paper Presentation Programmes are organised regularly to ensure that students of the department obtain a deeper understanding of the subject and are encouraged to construct, organise and present well-researched academic papers on the text of their choice. The Department hopes that such activities will encourage students to take up postgraduate studies in English, and aims to equip students with a knowledge and practice of academic and research activities. III. Jhargram Raj College English Alumni Association

The Department of English, Jhargram Raj College considers its members to be a part of a large family bonded by attachments that extend far beyond the classroom. Former students have always looked back at the college and its environment with fondness, and have always been eager to be a part of a community that restores these bonds and roots them firmly within the family that is the Department of English. Keeping these sentiments in mind, an Alumni Association of the Department of English was formed in 2018, on the initiative and guidance of Smt. Priyanka Mukhopadhyay Basu, and a few former students. This Association is an integral part of the larger Alumni Associationof Jhargram Raj College.

The Jhargram Raj College English Alumni Associationof has organised the following events:

The Alumni Association of the Department of English is an active body and plans to continue its activities regularly in the future.

 

IV. Other Departmental Activities

The Department encourages its students to take part in many other activities through the academic year.

 

Annual Farewell Ceremony for the Seniors:

The departure of the third year/final semester students of each batch is always a bittersweet occasion, and, annually, the students of the second year/third semester spare no effort in organising a Farewell Ceremony that celebrates the years spent together as a Department. The Farewell Ceremony also invites students who have graduated in the previous year to participate in the programme, and felicitates former teachers of the department. A cultural programme is held as part of this occasion.

 

Annual Freshers’ Welcome for the first year/first semester students:

Students of the department take a special interest in welcoming the new students of the department and in making them feel comfortable in their interactions with the members of the faculty and the senior students of the Department. The students of the second and third years/ third and fifth semesters actively organise a Welcoming Ceremony for the newly joined students. The Ceremony comprises a welcoming ceremony, a cultural programme and an informal interactive session between the new students and the other students of the department.

 

Wall Magazine:

The Department of English celebrates the creativity and energy of the students of the department by showcasing their works of art (poetry, prose reflections, essays, short stories, paintings, sketches) in the form of a Wall Magazine which is displayed prominently outside the Departmental Teachers’ Room. The Wall Magazine is created annually through the efforts of the teachers and students of the department, and is on display through the year.
