Jhargram Agricultural College evolved into Jhargram Raj College in July, 1949. It was initially under the aegis of the University of Calcutta and taught the Pass course of the University. The B.A. Honours course of studies begun in 1962 and the college witnessed a steady appointment of young professors who subsequently became figures of eminence. Professor Kalidas Bose may be mentioned in this regard. With the establishment of the Vidyasagar University in 1981, the college shifted its affiliation and adapted itself to the new regulations. The Public Service Commission continued to send qualified and eager teachers to mediate the courses. This resulted in very positive results from the students. The teachers constituted a department that undertook the responsibility of the students who were mostly first generation learners hailing from socio-economically underprivileged backgrounds from rural hinterlands. This relationship was reflected in the seminars, workshops and paper presentations conducted through the years. This continues to be the hallmark of the department.

The Department of English, offering a B.A. degree in English, played a key role in all of Jhargram and the adjoining regions, as no other government college existed at that time to cater to the needs of those aspiring to study English literature at the undergraduate level. The department has eight sanctioned posts and at present there are three full-time professors and three State Aided College Teachers. English Literature and Language has undergone tectonic shifts in interpretation and criticism, and the professors of the department have kept themselves informed and abreast. They have mentored the students through this tumultuous template and this is the singular feature of the department. Career counselling, gender sensitisation and co-curricular activities have been widely encouraged by the department to empower and sensitise the students as they step beyond the portals of the college into the larger world. Screenings of text-films and other related movies expose the students to the thematic and ideological complexities of literature, language and culture. The harmonious and productive interrelationship between the students and the teachers, which was established with the beginning of the department, has been nurtured through successive generations of professors.

Students of the Department have also participated in the State Level Youth Parliament, after winning in the District and Divisional categories. Every year, a large number of students register themselves as volunteers in the National Service Scheme (NSS) units of the college, and work with dedication and enthusiasm towards the upliftment of society. We also feel proud as we look back and recognise the many students who have successfully carved their careers in Education, Communication, Defence, and the State Police Service over the years. The success of the students is the biggest achievement of the department and source of pride and satisfaction. We remain committed to the education and empowerment of our students and society at large.
